Orthodontics is the process of aligning the teeth in a proper position which were not in the correct position when the mouth is closed. It basically focuses on correcting bites, occlusions, and straightness of teeth.

Orthodontics could also be taken up for cosmetic purposes as well to improve a person’s appearance and also helps in improving oral functioning.

Orthodontics and its types:

Orthodontics includes various types of braces, clear and removable aligners (Invisalign), forsus appliances and palatal expanders.

Braces are the devices made up of wire to apply force onto the teeth in order to align teeth in proper order/alignment or used for the correction of bite.

Braces come in varieties like the traditional braces, ceramic braces, lingual braces, and Invisalign.

Traditional braces are the wired and modern brackets that are smaller in size and are noticeable. These braces are very light in weight and are made up of highly stainless steel that has metal brackets which are attached to each other with elastics known as “ligature”. New heat-activated Archwires are also introduced that utilizes the body temperature to move the teeth quickly into proper order. Traditional braces are more light-weighted, reliable and cost-effective as well.

Ceramic braces are the same as traditional braces which are very similar to each other in function. These braces are clear and made up of transparent ceramic composites which make it invisible as they mix with the teeth’s colour. These are expensive as compared to the traditional ones.

Lingual braces are also known as Palatal Expanders. These are the braces that are affixed inside the mouth at the palate in order to correct the over-crowded teeth and get them placed in proper order after a period of usage.

With the invention of new technology, Damon braces are introduced. These braces self-ligating and use a slide mechanism where the elastics automatically adjusts according to the tooth.

Invisalign are invisible braces or clear and removable aligners used to straighten the teeth. These are invisible initially but when it gets worn out it pops out and shows outside. These are customized and can be removed while brushing or eating.

Forsus Appliances are used for kids starting from 7yrs of age as childhood is the best time to align and make corrections. Forsus appliances are the spring worn inside the cheeks that attaches to the braces in order to adjust the upper or lower jaw into position.

Benefits of Orthodontics:

Orthodontics helps in correcting the bites, it fixes the alignment of teeth and jaw in case they are dislocated or over-crowded. While solving these issues ortho eventually solves many problems such as unproductive chewing personality, misalignment of jaws and unnecessary pressure on gums. Orthodontics helps in boosting the self-esteem of people who were depressed due to the misalignment of the jaws or uneven teeth growth. It also helps in chewing the food properly. As all the teeth are in the proper position it also helps in brushing the teeth which prevent further infection or tooth decay. Orthodontics also helps in reducing the risk of injury from protruding teeth.

The necessity of Orthodontics:

Orthodontics is usually done to correct the teeth-growth, it also involves the alignment of jawbones, the overcrowded teeth and to straighten the teeth as well.

Orthodontics could also help in getting rid of numerous oral problems such as tooth decay and gum diseases.

In the case of protruding teeth, it needs to be rectified else there are chances that teeth might hurt the person while sports or in other activities. For crowded teeth, these could result in difficulties in brushing and flossing the teeth due to lack of space, hence giving rise to oral diseases. If the misalignment of teeth is not rectified then the tooth may face several types of the bite which may result in infections.

The number of appointments needed:

In the case of orthodontics which deals with numerous problems with a variety of issues, there isn’t any particular time frame for the patients. It would depend on the status of the teeth and which suitable procedure the dentist would take up to improve the tooth spacing or jaw alignment or any other issue.

It would completely depend upon the procedure the doctor takes up for rectification and treatment.

Does orthodontics affect teeth?

No. Orthodontics does not affect teeth. Ortho just deals with the rectification of teeth positioning, jaw alignment and with facial bones. It generally does not affect the tooth. But again it depends on the quality and the strength of the teeth to take up the whole procedure of orthodontics. Anyway, the dentist would suggest which could be the best way to overcome the problem without affecting the teeth.
