FAQs
The time it takes for a root canal to heal depends on a few factors, including the severity of infection and the type of procedure used. Generally speaking, most root canals will take anywhere from one week to two weeks to fully heal, but in some cases, it can take longer.
You can brush and floss as usual, but make sure to be gentle around the treated area. Avoid chewing on hard foods or using the treated tooth for biting down heavily until you’ve been cleared by your endodontist or dentist. You should not chew, drink hot or cold liquids, or smoke for the first hour.
With proper care, even teeth that have had root canal treatment can last a lifetime. But sometimes, a tooth that has been treated doesn’t heal properly and can become painful or diseased months or even years after treatment. If your tooth failed to heal or develops new problems, you have a second chance.
You can drink cold and warm beverages before the numbness has subsided, but wait at least 30 to 40 minutes after your root canal to ensure that the temporary filling has hardened. You will be able to drive yourself home from our office after your root canal and, if you’d like, you can return to work.
