Teeth scaling:

Teeth scaling is the previous stage of root planing. It is one of the non-surgical ways of treating gum diseases. In this procedure, the accumulated plaque and tartar are removed from the teeth which helps the gum in regaining its health.

The scraping is done not only at the level of the gums, rather the cleaning in done deep into the root levels to remove the hardened plaque and calculus also known as debridement. This helps in curing the gum tissues and reattaching the gums to the teeth. After then the healing starts.

It can be done in two methods, i.e, scaling with hand-held instruments and scaling with ultrasonic instruments

Scaling with hand-held instruments in this procedure sometimes the dentists are unable to see the plaque and tartar with naked eyes. As a result, they use a curette or a scaler to manually by touching the areas of plaque formation or tartar built up.

Scaling with ultrasonic instruments when the vibrational tip chips off the plaque and tartar from the teeth and water spray it to wash away and keep the teeth cool.

Root planing is the next stage of the treatment for severe periodontal diseases.
