What Is Orthognathic Surgery?

Orthognathic surgery is a procedure to correct irregularities in the jaw and facial bones, improving function and appearance. The surgery involves realigning the upper and lower jaws to correct bite issues, jaw asymmetry, or facial deformities. The process includes pre-surgical planning, making precise surgical cuts to reposition the jaws, and securing them with plates or screws. Orthognathic surgery can enhance chewing, speaking, and overall facial harmony, contributing to improved oral health and self-confidence. Post-surgery recovery involves rest and following specific care instructions to ensure optimal results.

  • Visited Jas Dental, a dentist clinic in Koramangala near Christ University for two dental procedures. For a cavity filling and teeth cleanup, the doctor did a thorough job. I had also gone in later for a wisdom tooth extraction, the doctor explained each step to me, and the extraction was quick. *Note that for extractions, it's advisable to book an appointment a day in advance to ensure the availability of the dental surgeon.

FAQs

How is the surgery performed?

The procedure involves making precise surgical cuts in the jawbones to reposition them. The jaws are then secured with plates, screws, or wires to ensure proper alignment during healing.

What should I expect before the surgery?

Pre-surgery preparations include orthodontic treatment to align teeth, comprehensive planning with X-rays and 3D imaging, and a detailed discussion of the procedure with your oral surgeon.

How long is the recovery period?

Initial recovery typically takes 6-8 weeks, during which swelling and discomfort gradually subside. Full recovery and stabilization of the jaw alignment may take several months.

Will I need to stay in the hospital?

Most orthognathic surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis, but an overnight stay may be required for some cases, depending on the complexity of the surgery.

Are there any risks or complications?

Risks include infection, bleeding, numbness, and changes in bite alignment. However, these are relatively rare and can be managed with proper care and follow-up.

How will the surgery affect my appearance?

Orthognathic surgery can enhance facial symmetry and profile. The extent of changes depends on the specific corrections made and individual healing.
