Filling Treatment
Saving Your Tooth and
Relieving Pain for a Healthier Smile
What Is Filling Treatment?
Dental fillings are used to restore teeth damaged by decay. The process begins with removing the decayed part of the tooth and cleaning the cavity. The cleaned area is then filled with a material that prevents further decay and restores the tooth’s function. Common materials include composite resins, which blend with the tooth color; amalgam, known for its durability; and glass ionomer, which releases fluoride. After filling, the dentist checks the bite and makes necessary adjustments. Regular dental care is essential to maintain the filled tooth and prevent new cavities.

September 19, 2023Visited Jas Dental, a dentist clinic in Koramangala near Christ University for two dental procedures. For a cavity filling and teeth cleanup, the doctor did a thorough job. I had also gone in later for a wisdom tooth extraction, the doctor explained each step to me, and the extraction was quick. *Note that for extractions, it's advisable to book an appointment a day in advance to ensure the availability of the dental surgeon.

FAQs
Common materials for fillings include composite resins (tooth-colored), amalgam (a mix of metals), glass ionomer (releases fluoride), and resin ionomer. The choice depends on factors like the cavity’s location, size, and the patient’s preference.
The process of getting a filling is typically not painful. Local anesthesia is used to numb the area, so you may only feel slight pressure or vibrations. Some sensitivity might occur after the procedure, but it usually resolves quickly.
The lifespan of a filling depends on the material used and the location of the filling. Composite fillings typically last 5-7 years, while amalgam fillings can last 10-15 years or longer with proper care.
Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing twice daily, flossing daily, and visiting the dentist regularly. Avoid hard or sticky foods that could damage the filling, and report any discomfort to your dentist.
Tooth-colored fillings are designed to blend with your natural teeth and improve their appearance. Silver or amalgam fillings are more noticeable but are often used in less visible areas.
Fillings can repair minor cracks and chips, but extensive damage may require other treatments such as crowns or veneers. Your dentist will assess the extent of the damage and recommend the appropriate treatment.
